  University of Houston Black Alumni Association’s Distinguished Honoree Jarvis Hollingsworth to be receive the Drum Major Award at the North Houston Frontiers Club (NHFC) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast. Jarvis is a UH alumnus and Partner at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. He is the former Chairman of the UH Board of Regents and he along with Bracewell & Giuliani have always been an outstanding supporters of the University of Houston Black Alumni Association (UHBAA). Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appointed alumnus Gerald McElvy as the University of Houston System’s newest Regent and extended the service of Regents Beth Madison and Tilman J. Fertita. Regent McElvy is a UH alumnus and holds a bachleors degree in economics and accounting. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles. Graduating Student Spotlight – Jessie Smith

Throughout high school, Jessie Smith saved his money, carefully setting it aside to pay for his college education. But when his father was diagnosed with – and ultimately passed away from – pancreatic cancer, his financial priorities shifted. “I lost my father when I was 17 years old,” he says. “Before he died, I’d promised him I would get a college education. However, after he passed away, I gave the money I had put aside for my college tuition to my mother to help her pay for the financial hardships we endured following my father’s death.” Smith graduated from Lamar High School in 2007 and started working full time while taking a few classes at the University of Houston – Downtown.
